...But the ultrasound...

Hi everyone. 2011 seems to be speeding by. We hit the -ember months few days back. Before we know it, we will be singing carols and welcoming 2012.

What's up with ultrasounds that will come up saying one thing and the other happens? A friend gave birth a couple of days ago and her ultrasound said she was going to have a girl. She went on a pink shopping frenzy. Bought girl clothes, cute captioned onesies, princess themed nursey, all the works and lo and behold she got a BOY.

Same thing happened before I had my last child. When I went for the ultrasound, I asked the technician
What I was having * I am one of those people who don't like surprises if I can help it* The guy asked if this was my first, I told him no that I had a girl the last time. He said it is hospital policy not to tell cos they've had cases where women who had all girls and who wanted a boy tried funny things like attempting suicide when they were told, a baby girl is in the oven.I told him I just needed to know so I would know what to get.He said you are having one like you. I heard that to mean I was having a girl. When I told my husband, he didn't believe cos of some old wives tales. I didn't argue. I was waiting for delivery then I will tell him I told you so *childish hmm?* Since I was having a girl, I didn't buy anything, I had more than enough from the last time.

After close to 8hrs of labour, I had the baby and the first thing my husband said was " I told u it was going to be a boy" I had my mouth open cos I thought the scan was always right and that I would be having a girl. So who is at fault now? Is it the technician that did not read the ultrasound right or it was a case of faulty machine? Would u like to know the sex of your baby before delivery or you would like to be plesantly surprised?

PS: I apologise for any typo I did this from my phone.

  1. It is more than likely the technician's fault. I know here, whatever sex they tell u, u r having is what u have. You just have to know what to look for and they also have 3d images too.

  2. hmmmmm............
    few rules...
Always buy non gender specific colors, yellows, greens, browns, purples, whites, reds, mauves etc.

Aim for Healthy, ten fingers, ten toes, fully developed lungs and other internal organs, hearing and vision.

the rest? par for the course.

  3. It could be the technicians fault or could it be that the baby was hiding. I have a few friends whose babies hid themselves every time they went for an ultrasound lol. My niece was supposed to be a boy too and you see how that went.

  4. That happens? wow never heard that before...I think it's the technician's fault!

Hmm...I'm pretty open...surprised or not...just along as my baby comes out alive and well!!!

  5. LOL... God saved you that you didnt have to shop. If you had gone on a shopping spree like your friend; u'd have suffered financial losses. Why wont women listen their husbands ehn? hahah *just kidding*

God knows my heart sha; I certainly want a boy first! lol | Do I want to know beforehand? Erm.. I don't know yet.

  6. Its most probably the technician's fault, or maybe NEPA too LMAO.
Anyway, u sometimes have to deal with surprises, my cousin couldnt even get a result, her baby was always turning away! LOL

  7. I don't ask for the sex of my babies, becox i know the incompetence of our labs {seriously} & i like the element of surprise....so i usually buy unisex clothes, then buy more when the baby is out....my friend was told a boy, she had a gal.. her hubby was so disappointed, becox he wanted a second son...another friend was told a gal, she was so happy becox she already had 3 boys, but she had another boy! she was not so happy.... me, i did not want the hypertension that comes with it...just as the technician said...i watched a documentary about an Indian woman who committed suicide and killed her five daughters when the scan said another gal, she had an induced labour when pressurized by her in-laws, and found she had killed the much awaited son! She got home, poisoned herself & her children....like Sting said, scans abroad are true to prediction because of advance in technology than in 9ja.

  8. Ha Ibhade is that soooooo? Wow we tend to forget children are a heritage from the Lord. Though I'd love to have a boy and a girl,I'll do a scan, and buy unisex stuff till the baby's born :) so it won't be two girls or two boys as against my one boy and one girl desire....

  9. wow, did not know scan made mistakes. i think i'l rather not know, but i don't know if i would be able to stand the suspense.

  10. *shock* at Ibhade's story

I never found out what I was having and I got baby clothes in yellow/white/green

I really dont see the need to check - pickin na pickin

  11. @Enybees & 9jamum, you seems surprised at the documentary right? i was also shocked & brought to tears as i watched it a human right activists wanted her brother to pick up a case against his in-laws, initially he agreed, but later backed out due to the usual 'communal influence'...the human right activist who was an oyibo man, was so sad & disappointed, that was how the case died.

Indians don't favour gals much becox of the dowry expected to be paid by the bride parents to the groom's family who can make any outrageous demand! So females are seen as more of a liability than asset.....so many films had been acted to proof that females are as valuable as men....but one of my hubby's colleague who is an Indian man told me,it is still prevalent, because a gal's worth determines how quick her marriage would be.. since it's arranged marriage that is still existing, love marriages are still few.

sorry for writing a post in your blog sistah, i was carried away :P

  12. @ Madam Sting: So it is the technician's fault? ehn ehn

  13. @ Rhapsody: Thanks for the advice. It is better to have a healthy baby with complete digits and parts than to bother about the sex

  14. @ Lady Ngo: Maybe the technician was tired and people asking him what they are having. I always wondered about the hiding baby too. What's up with that?

  15. @Blessing: The most important thing is that the baby is healthy abi. Thank you

  16. @ LDP: Why do most men want to have a boy first? Ah han!

  17. @ P.E.T Projects: Lmao @ NEPA. What's up with babies that keep turning. Maybe we should get the 3d machines so even when they turn we can still see.

  18. @ Ibhade: Thanks for all the stories with lessons to learn. Thanks for the post too. Please feel free to post anytime it shows passion for the subject being discussed and everyone can learn more. For one,I never knew that it is the bride's family that pays dowry to the grooms family. So that is one new thing I have learned from you. I guess it is just best to wait for the baby, but some people * like me* will die of suspense. It is such a pity that sometimes society has a role to play in all this.

  19. @enybees-hub: True children are a heritage from God. We as humans just wish, it is God that gives.

  20. @doll: Dont worry you will be able to bear the suspense.:-D

  21. I cosign @Rhapsody, health and well being first

  22. Probably the technicians fault, but I have heard story of babies who despite ultrasound at the last stage still end up coming as the opposite of the machine's tale.

  23. I like the element of surprise but at the same time, curiosity is my bane, lol...I'll probably find out. I think the technicians were too quick to say, I hear babies move around and so the p may be hidden at some point leading to mistakes.

  24. Funny enough, I'd want my first child to be a girl. But then again, pikin na pikin jere.

  25. Lols...I really don't mind anyone that comes first..boy or girl, but I just know I'd like to have both girls and boys...and I don't mind surprises

  26. Oh that would drive me crazy!! Definitely the technicians fault:-)

  28. The only time I asked to know the sex of my baby was for my first pregnancy, and I got an accurate result (thankfully). For the other two, I just wanted for the beautiful surprise! However, I made sure I shopped for unisex clothes, toys and accessories.

    Have a beautiful weekend!

  29. lol- My husband was surprised as well on our daughter's birth date since he was told we were having a boy and it turned out a girl- they are not 100% guarantee :)

  31. For my first I had a surprise though not out of choice. They had a 'policy' too. I was not pleased with the policy because it was only applied to Black and Asian parents!

For my second, there was no policy. So I knew. I predicted right for both babies so there were no surprises really, Only God's grace. I tend to predict correctly for other people's babies too. Though I'm careful who I choose to reveal to. It's just a 'feeling' kinda thing that I get and the way the pregnancy is positioned. Not that I see the baby in the womb o. Lol.
    Interesting post.

  33. Wow I didn't think this happened. Either way if it turns out 'wrong' it won't change my happiness of having a child.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thanks for stopping by, I would be excited for boy or girl, as long as the baby is healthy. Maybe it was a miracle by God unknown to you both.lol

  35. I think i am with NIL here,i dont think i want to know the sex of the child. I'll just buy neutral colors and hope for a healthy pikin.

I've heard about the hiding. i think its more about the positioning. the penis of a male fetus has a cartilage/bone which is what usually differentiates a male fetus and a female one. so if he is positioned in a way that the bones of the thighs cover the groin, it may not be possible. And thats how misdiagnosis occurs too. cause interefernce from other bony structures may make the ultrasnographer identify a female fetus as male. abeg too much technology!

  36. I wanted to know too. It was my first and I even though I gt a lot of gender neutral stuff, I still wanted to know. They got it right.

I think I want to be pleasantly surprised this time but...what if it turns out I am having more of the same? Will I kill myself? I really don't know what will happen. I just want two children.

I think I'll wait to see how I feel with the next one, but all signs point to 'SURPRISE ME'.
