Social media....

Happy New month friends. April is here!!! Did anyone get fooled on the 1st? Or did you fool anyone?  I didn't even fool anyone on that day but I got fooled by a few people and as it wasn't in excess or anything bad like accident or death, it was alright. I think the April fool pranks where you say living people died or they were involved in a fatal car accident are really scary for me, I don't know if I can take that kind of prank.

Social media has made the whole world more accessible and everyone is in everyone's business. Getting information and connecting with people is almost like blinking. The whole thing gives me a  high sometimes knowing that I have that power on the palm of hands; Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn,  etc. Reaching out to people, sharing your own views on issues, sharing your experiences, everything is just so easy now.

But there is good and bad to all this exposure. We seem not to know when to just shut down and talk to people face to face.  You see people out for lunch/dinner, church, theater and they are glued to their smartphones or taking furtive glances at it. It is just like we can't stop. We want to read what people are saying, see what they are wearing or doing, who they are getting engaged to or marrying, how they are bringing up their kids and we just don't know how to connect with someone face to face or maybe we don't see the need anymore. I am also guilty of this sometimes. I catch myself sending texts or links to my husband even when he is back home. I don't follow social media that much but when I do, I get caught  in the discussions, back and forth arguments or fights, potty throwing etc and it just makes me wonder sometimes. We are saying so much with our fingers but have forgotten how to say the same things with our lips.

The other day, I was listening to a  program on radio and the question was, can you give up social media if your partner said so? Most of the callers said never. They could never give up twitter, Facebook and the rest of them for anyone cos social media was an outlet for all the craziness and creativity in them. It sounded like mankind didn't experience quality living before social media. How were we handling all our creativity and craziness before? Whatever happened to hobbies? Now our hobbies are tweeting....

Where do we draw the line on flirting, cheating with social media? Some say they are just  fooling around words and should not mean anything, I think they mean something though. That is the root of emotional cheating. Are words not supposed to be like bonds? A written word more so? Hmmmm.

To be continued...... I think

  1. Thanks for sharing. I got pranked on April 1st, my preggers friend announced that she had put to bed. Lol.
The funny thing we survived before theadvent of social media, and i'm sure we can still survive without it. But if truth be told, it gives us a sense of bonding with people. I'd never have known some fantastic people i now know....I wouldn't even be here if it were not for the social networks *wink*
I love the picture you out up. Only kissed her wall indeed. Lol

  2. Very funny picture! I am also guilty of being addicted to social media. Moving forward, i'll stick to the good and leave the bad.

  4. I had this emotional cheating debate with a friend a while back. Words or actions, cheating is cheating. I intentionally do away with social media and stuff sometimes and i find it annoying when a friend is with me and he/she is checking the phone every time there's a ping. Balance is everything

  5. People agreed to get 'hooked' on the social media and they can also 'struggle' to live their normal lives again. Even if people decide it's a 'do or die' affair with the social media, they will definitely move ahead if for any reason the platform seizes to be. Happy new month!

  6. I once told someone that our forefathers never had all these technology and yet the lived their lives, which gave birth to literary and music legends and classic plays.
They knew how to socialize...in as much as technology has made life easier for us, by reducing risk of travelling, doing business, it came with it's own demons! It is better not to start at all, than to start and try to stop it.
Personally, I don't do FB, or BB or twitter...I only do blogger...and read Uk mail on line...after I have satisfied myself, I pick a book to read which could be my bible or a novel.....and watch a little TV. I am teaching myself gradually not to get addicted. Because my dear, internet is 'poisonous' to us as it is an 'anti-dote'. NA WA SHA! :D

  7. Most times what you see me doing online is blogging or reading blogs. I find it easy enough to switch off from FB and Twitter since I'm not really plugged into those, and tend to avoid drama like a plague. When it comes to friends, I prefer the few I have offline, and my family.

  8. I love social media because it helps me stay connected to my friends and family I moved away from. While facebook and blogger have helped bridge the gap of distance with loved ones back home and allowed me to make new online friends in the process, it is not a necessity and I can definitely live without it. Twitter on the other hand, I don't get. People love it though and maybe I just haven't tried hard enough to figure it out!

  9. Lol... great post. Its Watsapp, BB and the likes of them. Ah, some people are addicted to phone PERIOD. lol. I find when you are idle you are most sucked into the whole social media thing more except if it is work related.

I think that if you have important issues to sort out am sure fb and the rest of the social media will take a back seat.

  11. Blessings......
I can most definitely give up social media if i found it was interrupting too much of my own face to face community social interaction. I can take it or leave it, do i enjoy it, absolutely, do I see some benefits-hell yeah, still with all that I can take it or leave it. Its just a thing like any other and I don't hold to things.

    peace...

I actually do have some questions for you if you tend not to mind.
Is it just me or do some of these responses look like they are left by brain dead people?
